HYE Ruins Hardcore ... Again
  -- Friday, June 13, 2008

According to this Myspace bulletin, How's Your Edge? com has ruined hardcore AGAIN. We all realize that HYE ruined hardcore once by hosting the Edge Break List. But now, we've gone and done it again. We've turned a poor grass roots institution into a designer handbag-only event.

Text
Hows my Edge? Not so good since I am not sxe. Hardcore has become about materialism thanks to sites like Hows my Edge. It is pretty cool to look at some of the rare stuff people have but it also definitely stinks of materialism. I remember a time when most kids into hardcore were poor, sxe or not, and merch was cheaper and/or given out for free. But now hardcore is for the rich little bastards that are singing along to lyrics that 80 percent of them cannot relate too. No wonder why many great bands get disillusioned and break up. It is also one of the reasons why Ian Mackaye wants nothing to do with the scene he started. I don't blame him one bit.
I had planned on breaking this paragraph down sentence by sentence. But I won't. It's just too mind boggling of an issue.

For those of you who don't think we've ruined hardcore, thanks for sticking around the last 7 years (fuck, 7 years. That's a long time). Big shout outs to anyone who's been trading on those lists since the old xmulletx days!

I love HYE...but that guy has some truth to what he's saying. I mean, i've seen people sing about how,"i've fought for everything all my life" and different verations of that, BUT like they are all playing set ups that cost thousands of dollars. AND they come for well off families, and the hardest thing they'd had to do was keep Edge because some hot girl wants sleep with them. I get paying for merch and shit, because bands need money to fund the band. BUT when kids come to shows with $200 worth of clothes on, showing off tattoos that cost hundreds of dollars for each time they get one, and they sing along to songs that they don't know shit about, if fucking pisses me off. I mean, Soldiers are one of those bands that i heard the demo and right away, i fell inlove with the band. Rick's lyrics hit me deep, because i can relate. I've talked to him a few times, and i know nothing but sincerity comes ouf of his mouth. I'd figured that some of the people i knew would show up and support, because i'd figured they'd feel the same way about the band because of what they've said...BUT yet, when they toured, i didn't see any of those kids. The only way you'd get them out is if you put a show on that xARBx is playing. Don't fucking bull shit about your life, and don't rep hardcore/straight edge if all you want to do is look cool, and act tough. Hardcore means everything to some of us because it speaks to us more and better than anything else.

why does being into hardcore mean you have to live up to some standard set by people 30 years ago? the world's a different place. the music still rules but you can't possibly expect the face of hardcore to remain the same throughout its entirety. if the poster is picking on THIS site for the downfall of hardcore, he / she certainly is not seeing the forest for the trees. the downfall of hardcore has been happening since it started, and blamed on something different every generation, but it really is just reinventing itself.
